Game of Thrones fans are eager to see how the HBO series ends, and now that we know when Season 8 will premiere, the countdown can officially begin. We’re only a few months away to finding out who will sit on the Iron Throne, who will live, who will die, and which popular theories may turn out to be correct.

While HBO is being careful to prevent leaks, we still know some information about the final season. So here are all the details we know about Game of Thrones Season 8.

When Is the Game of Thrones Season 8 Release Date?

HBO revealed the Season 8 premiere date slowly. First, it kicked off its #FortheThrone campaign by announcing the final season would premiere in April 2019.

It wasn’t until a teaser featuring the Starks in the crypts of Winterfell (above) that the network revealed the exact premiere date: April 14.

When Will the Trailer for Game of Thrones Season 8 Drop?

Fans are eager for the official trailer for the final episodes, but they’re going to have to keep waiting.

Game of Thrones was featured in a sizzle reel for HBO’s series this past summer, revealing a tiny bit of new footage. The network also released a teaser with the premiere month announcement, but all of that footage came from previous seasons.

Another sizzle reel features Sansa Stark and Daenerys Targaryen meeting at Winterfell. “Winterfell is yours, Your Grace,” Sansa says (which just happens to be exactly what Ned Stark said to Robert Baratheon back in Season 1 Episode 1).

HBO has released a couple teasers, but it is unlikely that any footage in those will appear in the Season 8 episodes.

We do know that there will be an actual Season 8 trailer, as showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss told Entertainment Weekly, but it is unclear when that may be released.

Season 7 premiered in July 2017, and the first trailer for GoT Season 7 for that arrived about 5 months earlier in late March.

However, considering the intense secrecy around the final episodes, it’s likely we won’t get that trailer too far in advance of the premiere.

That being said, it is possible HBO could release something, even just another teaser, during the Super Bowl.

Who Will Be in the Cast For the Final Season of Game of Thrones?

Season

Characters such as Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) are all guaranteed to play major roles.

Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) will also be in Season 8, and the actor confirmed the news in an interview with Esquire.

“I feel like I’m at Wimbledon and I’m going to the final,” he said. “Now that I’ve made it to the final season, I want to make it to the final episode.”

As long as a character is alive, he or she could show up in the final season. However, an official cast list has yet to be released.

Familiar faces could always return, but if they do, they’re likely to come as a surprise. For example, Michiel Huisman (who plays Daario Naharis) said he’s “not allowed to say” if he’s in the final season in an interview with Collider.

What’s the Official Plot Summary for Game of Thrones Season 8?

HBO hasn’t released an official synopsis yet. However, Entertainment Weekly shared a tease about the beginning:

Season 8 opens at Winterfell with an episode that contains plenty of callbacks to the show’s pilot. Instead of King Robert’s procession arriving, it’s Daenerys and her army. What follows is a thrilling and tense intermingling of characters — some of whom have never previously met, many who have messy histories — as they all prepare to face the inevitable invasion of the Army of the Dead.

We’ve already gotten a tease of that in the two brief scenes in HBO’s sizzle reels.

“It’s about all of these disparate characters coming together to face a common enemy, dealing with their own past, and defining the person they want to be in the face of certain death,” co-executive producer Bryan Cogman told EW.

Director David Nutter described the final season as “spectacular, inspiring, satisfying” in an AMA (“As Me Anything”) on Reddit. He also promised “lots of surprises and shocking moments” while answering another question on Reddit.

“The White Walker army will not be the only issue our characters have to face in season 8,” Nutter teased in the AMA. “They have to also face each other.”

How Many Episodes in Game of Thrones Season 8 and How Long Will They Be?

The final season will consist of six episodes. That may sound short, but you can expect each episode to be a lot longer than your typical HBO show.

“Season 8 episodes will all I think be longer than 60 minutes,” Nutter wrote in the AMA. “They’ll be dancing around the bigger numbers, I know that for sure.”

HBO chief Richard Plepler has seen the episodes and compared them to “six movies” in an interview with Variety.

You can expect each of the show’s final episodes to feel like a stand-alone movie both in terms of length and production value. In fact, according to Variety, the rumor is that each will be approximately an hour and a half. That likely explains why the wait for Game of Thrones Season 8 has taken so long.

Now it’s finally within reach. Let’s just hope it can live up to the hype.
