so over the holidays, the pc died and cannot POST. HP warranty service came down and installed the new motherboard.
windows boots up and win10 cannot be activated.
I called microsoft phone support, they asked for my win 7 product key for which I have none. they asked me to get in touch with the manufacturer. I wrote to hp i have no idea how long it will take.
any suggestions?
a) image my win10 desktop. install win 8 from media. maybe the new motherboard has the key in the bios, then run win 10 upgrade. then restore my image on top of the drive again?
b) install win 8 from media on a vm on the pc, upgrade to 8.1, activate and upgrade the vm. then check win10 on the host is activated?
c) install win 8 dual boot on the PC. upgrade to 8.1, activate and upgrade . then boot back into win 10?
(note, I also have the win 7 recovery media).
